Dillon Sallows Has Strong Run at the New York State Fairgrounds During Super DIRT Week With Top 15 Finish in Sportsman Championship Race

After taking much of the summer off from racing, Dillon Sallows returned to the track last week at Super DIRT Week in Syracuse, New York.  After a strong run that went sour with engine problems in 2011, Dillon was hoping to come back under much better circumstances this season.

Sallows arrived in Syracuse on Wednesday morning and went through the vigorous technical inspection process that all cars must go through before they hit the track.  Once cleared, Sallows was ready for Thursday’s on track action.  They were able to get a practice session in late in the day, setting up a busy day on Friday that would include more practice, qualifying and the DIRTcar Sportsman Futures race.  Sallows had struggled in the early practice session, but come time for qualifying, he posted a fantastic lap, placing in 19^th out of the 68 Sportsman cars on hand for the week.  More importantly, this locked Sallows into the field for Saturday’s main event. 

The Futures race didn’t go well for Sallows, as he hit a rough patch on the track, and blew out a right front tire which sent his car into the wall.  They had significant damage to the car, but with some hard work, they were able to make the necessary repairs and were ready to hit the track on Saturday.  While Sallows was ready, Mother Nature was not and after some early Saturday morning rain, the track was late getting the events started for the day.  They were hoping to run the Sportsman event at the conclusion of the 358 Modified race, but time did not allow it, and the race was rescheduled to Sunday. 

“It is disappointing that we crashed in the Futures race, but we were able to get the car back together and we were ready to race on Saturday”, says Sallows.  “We can’t do anything about the weather though, so we will be back here tomorrow and see what we can do”.

Sunday was a much better day, and Sallows was able to hit the track for the 30 lap Sportsman event.  After starting 19^th, Sallows had dropped back several positions in the opening laps, but was able to rebound and start moving back up through the field.  He finished with a strong 14^th place result.

“Syracuse is a lot of fun for all of us.  It is definitely one of my favorite tracks to race it”, admits Sallows.  “We had a tough season with not getting to race very much due to engine problems, but we are really happy to come out of here with a good finish”.

Dillon Sallows Will Return to Action Next Week at Super DIRT Week XLI

After taking most of the summer off from racing, Dillon Sallows has regrouped, and is looking to tackle the fast confines of the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York for next week’s Super DIRT Week XLI.  This will be Sallows second attempt at qualifying for the prestigious Syracuse event.  Last year, he didn’t make the show after suffering motor issues before the end of the first practice session.

Sallows immediately took a liking to the “Moody Mile”, posting the seventh fastest speed in opening practice out of 62 other competitors.  Optimism was high in the Sallows camp leading into the next round of practice, but motor problems developed that ended up plaguing the team for the rest of the weekend.  They continued to try and rectify the issues, and ran the Futures race, and last change qualifiers to no avail, and the team was unable to make the race.

This year, Sallows will return, hoping that they can build on their early success from Super DIRT Week 2011, and earn a top 24 starting spot during time trials on Friday afternoon.  Sallows will have practice during the day on Thursday, and will run time trials for the Futures race and will return on Friday for the Futures race and regular time trials.  Saturday will be the 30 lap Sportsman Championship event.

“I had a great time last year at Syracuse and I can’t wait to get back there next week and see what we can do”, says Sallows.  “Being at Syracuse is very exciting and the speeds are pretty incredible.  We had a pretty tough year and had to take some time off, but now we are ready to get back to business”.

Dillon Sallows Has Good Weekend With Third Place Finish at Mohawk Raceway and Seventh at Cornwall Speedway

After struggling the previous week, Dillon Sallows returned to the track this past weekend looking for much better results.  The usual weekend routine was in store with events at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday.

At Mohawk Raceway, Sallows struggled to a sixth place finish in his qualifier, but after making some adjustments to the car, he was ready for battle in the 20 lap main event.  Starting from seventh, Sallows quickly moved into the top five, and with the first caution at lap four, he was up to fourth place.  Sallows continued to run inside the top five, and in the closing laps, he moved up to finish with a strong third place run.

“We struggled in the heat race, but were able to get the car going better in the feature”, says Sallows.  “We needed just a couple more adjustments and we might have been able to finish even higher”.

Cornwall Speedway was up next with their regular Sunday night show.  Sallows won his qualifying heat race, and was hoping for another good run in the 20 lap feature. He started the race from inside the second row in third place and stood his ground through the opening laps.  After getting caught up on the outside, Dillon lost some ground to the leaders, falling back to eighth place, but he battled back to end the night with a seventh place result.

“It wasn’t the run we wanted, but it wasn’t too bad.  I got caught on the outside and couldn’t get back in line, and we lost some ground, but we just kept digging, and made it up to seventh”, says Sallows.  “I really have to thank the crew, and all of our sponsors for their support”.

This coming week, Sallows will be back at Mohawk International Raceway for round 2 of the Frenchie’s “Drive One” Sportsman Series.  The Sportsman have the night off at Cornwall Speedway and will return the following Sunday for a 50 lap Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series race.

Dillon Sallows Gets Top Ten Finish at Mohawk Raceway; Makes 2012 Debut at Brockville Speedway

The 2012 season hasn’t gone the way Dillon Sallows had planned, but the team continues to work hard, and with a little luck, they will get back to victory lane soon.  This past weekend, Sallows had a rare Thursday night race planned at Mohawk International Raceway instead of their usual Friday night date.  With Cornwall giving the Sportsman division the night off on Sunday, Sallows also raced at Brockville Speedway for the first time in 2012.

At Mohawk Raceway on Thursday night, Sallows started his qualifying heat race from fourth place and took the lead early, and by the end of the race had built up a substantial lead and went on to pick up the checkered flag.  In the 20 lap main event, Sallows hoped to carry that success from the qualifier over to the feature.  He started the race from the outside of row three in sixth place, and maintained that spot over the first 12 laps.  As the race progressed, the handling on the car started to go away, and Sallows slid back to ninth place at the checkered flag.

“The car was ok at the beginning, but it just got way too tight towards the end of the race”, said Sallows after the race. “We will get it figured out soon.  It is such a tough field of cars here each week, but we are learning a lot and hope to get up front”.

With Cornwall Speedway giving the Sportsman class the night off, Sallows decided to race at Brockville Speedway on Saturday night.  Being their first race of the year at the track, Sallows would have to start at the rear of the field, but this race wasn’t about finishing position, it was more about getting seat time and getting more familiar with the Brockville track.  He started at the back of his heat race, and finished sixth and would start at the back of the 22 car field for the 25 lap main event.  Sallows battled a very tight handling car, and but still moved up through the field and finished in 13^th.

This coming weekend Sallows will return to the regular routine, with Mohawk Raceway on Friday night and Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday.  Sallows is currently 12^th in points at Mohawk Raceway, and eighth at Cornwall.

Dillon Sallows Gets Rained Out at Mohawk International Raceway for the Second Week in a Row; Sixth Place Finish at Cornwall Speedway

For the second week in a row, Dillon Sallows and his team made the trip to Mohawk International Raceway, only to get rained out.  This time however, after getting to the track, they were hit by a major storm that left plenty of rain, and even large hail at the track.  When the storm passed, the sun came out, and the decided to continue on, and nearly two hours later, the track was almost in racing conditions before the rain returned, forcing track officials to cancel.

Sunday was a much better day, and Sallows got the evening off to a great start with a convincing win in his qualifying heat race.  In the 20 lap main event, he started from eighth place and quickly moved forward, moving to third before the first yellow at lap three. Sallows maintained a top five position through most of the event, and fell to sixth in the closing laps.

“The car just got way to tight towards the end of the race”, commented Sallows.  It was a good run for us, and hopefully next week we can be just a little bit better.  I really have to thank my Dad, and the guys that help on the car, my sponsors, and everyone that helps us out each week”.

Dillon Sallows Looking to Find Consistency Early in 2012 Racing Season

It hasn’t been the start of the season that Dillon Sallows had been hoping for.  Some bad luck at Mohawk Raceway has been discouraging and they have been struggling to find their groove after the first month of the 2012 season at Mohawk Raceway.  The team has also been racing at Cornwall weekly, and they have felt much better about their performance at Sallows favorite track.

The night started off well for Sallows on Friday night at Mohawk Raceway.  He turned some very competitive laps in the opening practice session.  In their qualifying heat though, Sallows got caught up behind a slower car while battling for position, and knocked off the right front shock tower.  After working hard to get back out for the feature, the car just did not handle the way it should have, and he would come out with a disappointing 11^th place finish.

On Sunday night at Cornwall, Sallows had a much better night.  He was fourth fastest in opening practice, and finished his qualifying heat race in fourth.  He would start the 20 lap main event from 15^th place, and battled his way forward.  At the checkered flag, Sallows had finished with a very respectable sixth place run.

“It was a great night for us.  The car worked much better then it had at Mohawk”, says Sallows.  “I really have to thank my sponsors, my parents, and the pit crew for all their help this year”.

Dillon Sallows Has Solid Weekend With Top Ten Finishes at Mohawk Raceway and Cornwall Speedway

After a busy week putting the car back together after an opening night crash at Mohawk Raceway, Dillon Sallows and the DKD Racing team were looking forward to getting the car back on the track, and putting their hard work to the test.  The team had events planned at Mohawk once again, as well as the 2012 season opener at Cornwall Speedway.

It took a lot of work, and a lot of help from several people, but by mid week Sallows had his car back together and ready for Friday night at Mohawk Raceway.  It didn’t take long to realize the car was fast, as he took the lead from the start of his heat race, and held it for the first five laps before settling in for a second place finish.  In the 20 lap Sportsman feature, Sallows started from seventh place, and after four laps, he had made it to the top five.  It was evident that he had a strong car, and he held that fifth spot until the final lap, and ended with a sixth place result.

“We are pretty happy with that finish, considering all the work we did on it this past week just to get the car ready”, says Sallows.  “I really have to thank everyone that helped us out, or we certainly wouldn’t be hear racing if it wasn’t for them”.

Cornwall Speedway is Sallows favorite track, and site of his first career Sportsman win last year.  It was their 2012 season opener on Sunday night, and Dillon was happy to get back to the track.  After starting sixth in his qualifier, Sallows was able to move up to third by the checkered flag.  In the 20 lap feature, Sallows started from outside of the fourth row in eighth place, and the car was fast early as he was able to move into the top five quickly.  After an unsuccessful attempt to try the outside lane, he lost several spots, falling outside the top ten, but he battled his way back for a ninth place run.

“I really think we had a better car then what the results show”, says Sallows after the race.  “I tried to go up top, but there was nothing there, and I lost a lot of positions, but the car was really good, and I was able to get most of them back”.

This coming week Sallows will be back at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday looking to capture their first win of 2012.

Dillon Sallows Has a Night to Forget an Mohawk International Raceway Season Opener; Will Return to MIR this Weekend and Cornwall Opener

It was a difficult start to the 2012 season for Dillon Sallows and the DKD racing team.  The season opener at Mohawk Raceway had the team excited about their chances, but a crash in opening hot laps, a spin in his qualifier, and a hard crash on lap two of the feature made for a miserable night, and a frustrating start to the season.

Problems started early in hot laps, as the Sallows fought some steering issues, and ended up backing the car into the wall.  The car had some significant cosmetic damage, but they were able to get that fixed up and get ready for the qualifying heat.  The problems continued in the heat, and after a spin on lap five, he reported to the pit area to further diagnose the issues.  Just as the Sportsman division were about to complete lap two of their 20 lap feature, the steering on Sallows car locked up completely, sending their car hard into the fourth turn wall, causing heavy damage to the car.  Dillon was able to walk away without injury, but the front end of the car was destroyed.

“It was a bad night that kept getting worse”, explains Sallows.  “We had just installed that steering box in the car on Wednesday night, and we had problems with it all night long.  It is a tough way to start the season, but we will recover, and hopefully we can get this thing repaired for next week”.

The racing community is a very close group, and when other racers found out the damage on Sallows car, several were ready to offer support, and lend a helping hand.  The Whitteker Motorsports team from Iroquois, Ontario offered up a front clip for the car, Jon Mills team from Gananoque helped out with bumpers, Action Race Parts helped with parts to get the car back together, Doug Banks replaced the front clip, and Tom Benedict of Cheater Motorsports also helped to get the car ready for action this weekend.

Dillon Sallows Makes First Start of 2012 at Can Am Motorsports Park on Saturday Night; Attends Brockville Speedway Practice on Sunday

The plan for this Dillon Sallows for this past weekend was to attend the Mohawk International Raceway practice session, and get their car dialed in for opening night, but that planned changed when Mohawk Raceway officials decided to cancel the afternoon practice session due to wet grounds.

Looking to get some track time, Sallows and the DKD Racing team made the decision to race at Can Am Motorsports Park on Saturday night.  They had just installed their new motor early in the week, and were anxious to get on the track for the first time in 2012.

It was a struggle much of the night for Sallows, as he battled an ill-handling car throughout the evening.  He started the 20 lap feature for the rear of the field, and by the end of the race he had climbed to 17^th place.

“It was not how we wanted to start our season, but we just didn’t have it all together tonight”, said Sallows.  “Our shocks that we plan to race with are still getting serviced, and we are making due with what we have until we get them back.  We will be much better when we start the season at Mohawk next week”.

Sallows also had some track time at Brockville Speedway, as they hosted a practice session for race teams on Sunday afternoon. Sallows ran a total of 63 laps during the day, and was amongst the top five in speed for the Sportsman division.

“We had a good day here today.  It was nice to get some practice in, but I am really looking forward to getting the season started at Mohawk this coming weekend, and Cornwall the following weekend”.

Dillon Sallows to Represent Finish Line Web Design at Gater Motorsports Expo This Weekend; Frontenac Mall Car Show Two Weeks Away

It has been more then five months since the 2011 racing season ended for Wolfe Island, Ontario racer Dillon Sallows and the DKD Racing team. Over the off-season, the team has worked hard on their racing program, and are confident that 2012 will be the best year to date for their family operated race team.

While the first green flag is still over a month away, the team does have several racing related events taking place over the next few weeks, beginning this weekend at the Gater Racing News Motorsports Expo in Syracuse, New York. Sallows will have his car on display, and will be available to sign autographs throughout the coming weekend. The car will be on display in the Finish Line Web Design booth at the Motorsports Expo, which is held at the New York State Fairgrounds.

“I really have to thank Finish Line Web Design for asking us to be a part of this years Motorsports Expo”, says Dillon Sallows. “It will be great for our current sponsors to have our car displayed for all to see, and we will be available all weekend to talk to any potential sponsors that may be interested in joining our team”.

The Motorsports Expo will take place this coming weekend, with set up on Friday afternoon and evening. The show opens to the public at 10am on Saturday morning and runs through 9pm on Saturday night. On Sunday, the gates open at 11am and runs until 4pm.

Once the Syracuse car show is over, the next event on the schedule is the Racing exhibit at the Frontenac Mall in Kingston, Ontario. Sallows car, along with several others will enter the mall on Wednesday, March 21^st, and the show will continue through March 24^th.

“The Kingston car show at the Mall is always a great event for us”, says Sallows. “It gives great exposure to our sponsors, and it gives us a chance to chat with race fans, and people that are at the Mall that may not have seen this type of racing before. It is always nice to meet new people, and maybe get them to come out to the track someday”.
